It was my great good fortune to meet bird enthusiasts Julian Hudson and Christine Croton this spring, and to be able to pursuade them to come to Nuk Tessli to guide a bird tour.
Although I have been fascinated by the birds in my subalpine and alpine back yard and have done my best to compile a bird list, I am still very much a beginner and there is much to explore. Birds of note include: occasional sightings of Grey-headed Rosy Finch, and an abundance of both Willow and White-tailed ptarmagin. Dippers nest in the alpine and even winter close to Nuk Tessli's cabins, which are only 300m below the treeline.
In my 22 years' residence of the area, I have noted a few anomalies such as: Northern Shrikes well above the accepted altitude, Common Mergansers nesting much higher than recorded, and breeding Blackpolled Warblers apparently beyond the western edge of their range.
A group of six people sharing a single cabin will be able to keep the costs down both for cabin rent and flight; if the tour is full, the experience would come to around $550 per person, which includes accommodation and expert guiding but no food. Participants can self-cater or order home-cooked meals. (But you will not be eating Savanna Sparrow's eggs!)
