CHRIS' PHOTO JOURNAL

Gentian Valley, 11-13 July, 2008.         Part 2

There are many different hikes both high and low that one can take in and around Gentian Valley.
But for me, at this time of year, the exciting thing about it is the rock alpines, many of them quite rare.

It is fun to follow the river up.
The valley is north-facing and the little river is usually half buried in snow this early in the year..

At the top of these falls, the river spreads over a wide stoney area full of tiny islands of flowers

A little later in the year, I might be lucky enough to find the Slender Gentian, after which this valley is named.
It might be the only place in BC where it is recorded.

But I could not find it this time. Instead, there were mats of miniature Butterworts

And Alpine Goldenrods

Birds'beak Louseworts dotted the area

n

And there were many wonderful Alpine Harebells

Higher up the river becomes smaller

And I came to a small lake

Followed by the main lake at the head of the valley.

My final destination was just off the right of the picture at the back,
where rocky bluffs house a tremendous variety of alpine plants.
