CHRIS' PHOTO JOURNAL

Gentian Valley, 11-13 July, 2008.         Part 4

Gentian Valley's most interesting plants, however, grow on bluffs that are permanently soaked by snowmelt.

Here one finds the Woodland Saxifrage
(I have no idea why it is called that. I find it only in the alpine.)

This is the only place that I have found the Mist Maiden

And there is also an occasional Saxifrage that I have been unable to identify.

Another mystery plant is a Cinquefoil I have not determined. It looks a bit like P. villosa, but it is smaller and wet-loving.

I have never found it outside this valley.

And finally, the rarely-seen alp lily.
It is fairly common but blooms early and leaves two dried oniony leaves when it has finished flowering.

All good things come to an end and it is time to return towards home.

But as one comes out of the valley, there is a short but spectacular view of Mount Monarch.
