Home Again! - Fire update
10th August, 2009

UPDATES ON THE EVACUATION AND WILDFIRE

It was dull and windy when we flew in yesterday evening.

The only evidence of fire that we could see was smoke near Hunlen Falls,
coming from the Turner Lake blaze which had been extremely fierce on the 8th.

It was about 6.30 pm when we landed; we were greeted by the sprinkler crew,
"the structure protection officers" who were waiting for their ride home.
Their very large helicopter landed in about 15 minutes.
(Take note of the rear guy's hard hat!)

The men told me the fire was at the head of Knot Lake.

They said they would not know where they would be today - that decision is made afresh every morning.
But they would likely be back in the next day or two.
They left instructions as to how to operate the equipment.

There were two heavy-duty pumps,

what must have been at least a kilometre of hosepipes snaking all over the place,

and 16 sprinklers perched on rocks

and stuck in odd corners.

There was even one on the woodshed.

They had operated the pumps for two days in a row and the ground was quite wet.
(They even managed to water the garden!).
Next year's wood, stacked carefully outside, got a good soaking, but inside the woodshed everything was dry.

The cabin was a bit of a disaster inside.
We had left unwashed dishes and produce in coolers; there were some very interesting moulds!

But outside there was very little mess.
The fallers had not taken very much down.
Only a broken tree that was dying, and which I had intended to clear up anyway.

Last night it rained quite a bit.
This morning was partially clear; this is exactly where I saw the huge pile of smoke on August 1st.
Now you would never know that there had been a fire.
