North Pass Lake
19th July, 2010


It has been six weeks since I went to the North Pass.
Then, everything was thick with snow and the lake was still frozen.

Now it was very hot and still when I canoed up to Big Beach to start the hike.


Which made for some striking photography on the way up,

Flightseeing to Nuk Tessli


But the bugs were pretty bad.

(This is a gold-crowned sparrow.)

There was no wind at North Pass Lake either,
but the meadows were starting to come into bloom.

That is the North Ridge behind; Snowshoe Mountain in the middle, and the Mammaries on the left.
Lupins and Heathers were the main displays

 


But there was a bright clump of Mountain Meadow Buttercups,


. . . and a few of the tiny, curious, Mitrewort.

North Pass Lake

Most flower patterns have evolved to attract pollinators.
One wonders what strange insect is turned on by this display.

Most colourful of all were some amazing patches of Bog Laurel.

Unknown Mountains

Most of them are nameless
